The subtle country music played in the background as the noise of a packed restaurant set the stage for Smokin’ Joe’s Stilly’s opening night.

On the outskirts of Stillwater, a new barbecue joint, Smokin’ Joe’s Stilly, kicked off the grand opening last week.

Loaded with activities for all ages, Smokin’ Joe’s Stilly offers food and entertainment. Entering into the building, the interior design of the restaurant gives a very rustic feel completed with barnwood walls and cowhide chairs for seating.

“We have been watching the building process of Smokin’ Joe’s Stilly for a while,” said Brian Vaugh, a Smokin’ Joes customer. “And have been looking forward to the opening for months.”

A variety of staple barbecue meats are offered on the menu including brisket, pulled pork, hot links, bologna, chicken along with other meats. Plates offer side dishes that include coleslaw, fries, beans and okra. Customers can finish the meal with desserts like peach cobbler or banana pudding.

“I got the chopped brisket sandwich and it was delicious,” customer Hailey Obradovich said.

More than just a restaurant, Smokin’ Joe’s Stilly offers entertainment. Two volleyball courts, outdoor seating and an outdoor bar give customers an added experience.

“My vision was to create a restaurant with something to do,” Scott Stedman, the owner and former OSU student, said. “Stillwater doesn’t have anything like that, so I wanted to start Smokin’ Joe’s Stilly.”

Stedman was inspired to open his own barbecue joint after visiting a restaurant in Arizona years ago. Stedman said the restaurant was filled with carousel horses, airplanes and volleyball courts. Several years later, Stedman took that inspiration and created Smokin’ Joes Stilly.

“It’s the perfect place to play volleyball, drink a beer and watch a sunset,” Stedman said.

He said even though there’s a bar, the outdoor entertainment area is family friendly and open to all ages.

“Anybody can come,” Stedman said. “I have kids playing in the sand all day long.”

Stedman said the restaurant is a family affair and he’s very excited to work alongside his sons in his new adventure. The restaurant was a big reason why Stedman moved back to Stillwater and is happy to be back home.

When asked what Stedman is most looking forward to, he replied with a grin, “I enjoy the people and being back in Stillwater.”
